Medical Debt Is Top Reason Consumers Hear From Collection Agencies
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that 59 percent of people contacted by a debt collector had outstanding medical bills. Telecommunications and utility bills trailed far behind.
Obamacare Plans Don't Always Include Top Cancer Centers
In a number of states, including big ones such as New York and Texas, leading cancer centers like Memorial Sloan Kettering aren't included in insurers' networks. What's a patient's recourse?
The Teens Are All Right: 2011's Top 5 YA Novels
Young adult literature has never been so psychologically probing or artistically ambitious as it is today. Marissa Meyer's favorite novels beguile, thrill and, above all, transport younger readers to a Shakespearean magical theater, futuristic Chicago and a netherworld of ghost hunters.
Theater Talk: Tonys are in the books, local shows delight: "EARNEST" at Irish , THE SOUND INSIDE at The Kav, Raíces presents BLOOM
The Tony Awards on Broadway were (unscripted) fun although we were disappointed that Buffalo's Stephen McKinley Henderson did not win Best Actor. "EARNEST" continues at Irish Classical as does THE SOUND INSIDE at the Kavinoky ("a marvelous little puzzle of a play" says Anthony) and BLOOM directed by Katie Mallinson finds the Raices Theater Company using the Road Less Traveled Stage. For 30 years (as of November 2022) Theater Talk has been appointment listening on WBFO, featuring the insights of theater critic and historian, Anthony Chase, who joins Peter Hall for a five-minute weekly broadcast at 6:45 and 8:45 Friday mornings on 88.7 WBFO with a podcast available on wbfo.org. NOTE: Theater listings are included with the podcast. As part of BTPM (Buffalo Toronto Public Media), their beat is primarily Buffalo theater, but Broadway, The Shaw Festival, and The Stratford Festival are covered as other relevant art forms are touched on, including ballet and opera.

Theater Talk: Is theater in free fall? Buffalo's sold-out run of CHICAGO, huge audiences at SIDP, MusicalFare, and Shawfest all say "Not here!"
Recent op-ed pieces in The Washington Post, The New York Times, and NPR ask the question "Is theater in free fall?" but Anthony says that while some of the high profile theaters such as the Mark Taper Forum in L.A. or Long Wharf in New Haven might be struggling with high overhead costs, here in Buffalo things seem to be good. Biden To Toss Trump Plan That Would Have Made It Easier To Fire Top Civil Servants
Former President Donald Trump's plan has been decried as an attack on people he called the "deep state" when it was announced in October.
6 Strongmen Trump Has Praised — And The Conflicts It Presents
From Egypt to the Philippines, the president's praise of despotic and brutal leaders is raising eyebrows. He also has potential business conflicts in or related to all of the countries.
Theater Talk: Eight shows close this weekend, including excellent HEDWIG and INTO THE WOODS, while EARLY GIRL continues (see listings). Note Artie Award Nominations on BTPM NPR Monday at noon.
This week on Theater Talk, Anthony and Peter caught up on shows the other had seen. HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH (see listings) directed by Michael Gilbert-Wachowiak and starring Kris Bartolomeo and drag queen Vanna Deux and O'Connell & Company's charming INTO THE WOODS Opening night of THE EARLY GIRL featured seven equally fine actors, including Kai Crumley in a leading role and Juli Grygier back on the ART stage as solid as she was as in THE INFORMER. Eight (8!) shows close by Sunday this weekend (see listings) and they're all very good. The Artie Awards are scheduled for Monday, June 9th at Asbury Hall on Delaware Avenue at 8 p.m. Amy Jakiel and Curtis Lovell return as hosts, along with Anthony Chase. Tickets will become available on May 19th, immediately following the nominations announcement on Buffalo-Toronto Public Media at noon. Visit BTPM NPR on YouTube or Facebook. For 32 years (as of November 2024), Theater Talk has been appointment listening on WBFO, featuring the insights of theater critic and historian Anthony Chase, who joins Peter Hall for a five-minute weekly broadcast at 6:45am, 8:45am, and 5:45pm Fridays on 88.7 WBFO with a podcast available on btpm.org.
