Wind advisory in effect until 6 p.m. for all of WNY

WBFO news file

A weak cold front moving through Western New York today is bringing high winds with it. With strong gusts of up to 57 mph, the National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for the region until 6 p.m.

NWS Meteorologist Jim Mitchell said this should be the highest winds we see this week.

“We’ll have a little bit more wind on Friday, but nothing like this,” Mitchell said. “We got another front coming in with some rain towards the end of the week. But this should be, as far as headlines go, this should be it for the week”

Mitchell said he doesn’t think home owners will have to worry about power outages.

“There’s no leaves on the trees. It’s a traditional west to southwest direction so don’t anticipate anything major,” he said. “Probably the biggest thing would be stuff like trash cans and those kind of things. I saw on my way to work this morning there was already one blown in the road in the dark. So it’s things like that. They’re probably more hazardous than anything else”

Mitchell urges drivers of larger vehicles to be cautious said the strongest winds should come during the late morning through the early afternoon.
