The heat is on again in WNY by midweek

After parts of Western New York enjoyed a weekend that included comfortable breezes and even a brief burst of rain, hot and humid weather is heading back into the region.

The National Weather Service in Buffalo is forecasting temperatures in the mid 80s along Lake Erie on Tuesday with temperatures closer to 90 further inland. It's expected to get even hotter on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching the low 90s.

Meteorologist Jim Mitchell  told WBFO the odds are good that by midweek forecasters may issue warnings that weather conditions could pose health risks for senior citizens and people with respiratory problems.

"We could definitely see some Air Quality Alerts," Mitchell said. "It's a typical situation where you have a lot of particles trapped underneath this high pressure, so it wouldn't be a surprise if we do see some Air Quality Alerts."

Western New York may not become hot enough to warrant a Heat Advisory, which Mitchell explained is determined by a combination of heat and humidity. That may be possible, though, for the Genesee Valley and Finger Lakes regions, Mitchell advised.
