More improvements are on the way for bike riders in Buffalo. As WBFO's Chris Caya reports, the city has rolled out its long-awaited new Bicycle Master Plan.
A new Bicycle Master Plan for the city of Buffalo was unveiled Friday. During a press conference on the recently completed North Buffalo Rails-To-Trails, Mayor Byron Brown said the citizen-driven document embraces the growing bicycling movement in the city.
"By the end of this year there will be 90 miles of bicycle lanes throughout the city of Buffalo. And by 2018 our goal is to get to 150 miles of bicycle lanes," Brown said.
The mayor said planning, implementation, and maintenance of city streets, public works and transit projects will now include improvements for bicyclists of all abilities.
GOBike Buffalo Executive Director Justin Booth said the new plan involved public leadership, the private sector and grassroots organizations working together.
"This bicyling master plan is really laying the groundwork for us to build that network and make those connections and really build Buffalo into the future," Booth said.
Brown said he remains committed to adding 10 miles of bike lanes to city streets each year. He said the document supports Buffalo's vision of becoming a "world-class bicycling community."
