Plans have been unveiled for restoring Fosdick Field at City Honors School. Public housing that stood on the land for nearly 35 years was recently demolished.
City Honors-Fosdick Masten Park Foundation President James Eagan says the project will benefit City Honors students and the Fruit Belt neighborhood.
"It's not just going to be a field where kids are going to play soccer and football. It's going to be that, but it's also going to be a community space. It's going to be true park where people can walk and enjoy themselves. It's not a fenced off area. It's something that the entire community [can] enjoy," Eagan said, at a news conference Tuesday morning.
Along with park space, plans include removing Fosdick Avenue and building an all-weather athletic and recreation field.
The Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority acquired the land in 1977 for low-rent housing that has since been torn down. Nearly two dozen organizations and elected leaders are supporting the current plan.
"This is a project that specifically benefits the local community," Eagan added. "This is a unique opportunity that we have to build a park in the middle of our city. There's not many time that you're going to get this kind of opportunity."
The site of the proposed Fosdick Field was originally part of the City Honors campus designed by Frederick Law Olmsted.
