Elmwood apartment building fire forces out residents

Google Street View

A fire at an Elmwood Avenue apartment building displaced several residents late Tuesday morning. A two-alarm blaze broke out at the Brent Manor Apartments at 366 Elmwood, between Summer and Bryant, around 10 a.m.  Officials say the fire started in a second-floor apartment of the six-story, 112-unit structure.

A stretch of Elmwood was closed off and the blaze was extinguished within an hour. Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says oxygen cylinders may have helped the fire spread.

The Buffalo News reports building staff assisted some residents to the ground using a ladder. Two people were taken to the hospital with what appear to be minor injuries.

It is unclear when building residents may be allowed to return to their homes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  A damage estimate has not been calculated.
