All drinking fountains in Lackawanna City Schools have been turned off and sinks have warning signs on them, after elevated levels of lead were found from a variety of sources.
District Superintendent Lisa Almasi sent out a letter to parents Tuesday, after test results came back elevated last Friday at Truman, Martin Road, High School, Middle School and McKinley - including in drinking fountains and sink faucets.
Almasi says the water will remain turned off until lead levels return to "acceptable" levels of 15 parts per billion. The letter includes information from the Environmental Protection Agency, stating that elevated lead levels usually come from eroding faucets, fittings and pipes.
The Superintendent says follow-up testing is being conducted and any sources of lead contamination will be identified and remediated.
