With calls for a takeover of the city school district and a search for new leadership, a SUNY Board of Trustee from Buffalo offers some insight. WBFO's Focus on Education reporter Eileen Buckley has details.
"I have to tell you, I've worked for the Buffalo Public School District for 32 years and there is a lot of local talent in the city of Buffalo.
SUNY Trustee Eunice Lewin doesn't believe outside intervention in the Buffalo Public School District is the answer.
While not directly giving her opinion on a state takeover or a mayoral take over of the district, Lewin instead looks to the selection process of the next schools superintendent. She's a big believer in local talent.
"I think it is about time for us to look real deep -- because I think there is a lot of talent," stated Lewin. "I think we need to trust our talent. I think we need to empower our talent. I strongly believe that."
Lewin tells WBFO News her biggest wish for the District is for the school board needs to first identify a common goal. Lewin said the divided board and failure to produce results is "very troublesome."
"My biggest wish, and it is externally time sensitive, and we need to work on that immediately, and that is the board needs to work on a common goal. The goal is very, very divided, and I think they represent our district and if they can't engage themselves in a productive conversation, it worries me," said Lewin.
Lewin also reacting the Governor's proposed education reforms. Lewin said a great deal of money is spent on education and it's time to be accountable and positive outcomes are a must.
"We need to know why," said Lewin. "We owe this to the taxpayers,"
