A local school teacher is the only Western New York teacher to be selected as a PBS Learning Media Digital Innovator. In this Focus on Education report WBFO'S Eileen Buckley says it works to promote digital training and education in the classroom.
"Technology integration in the classroom -- it was something that I was really excited about and really wanted to get involved in right away," said Kirsten Kenny, Religion 9 teacher at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart in Eggertsville.
Kenny was selected as one of 100 teachers named to the top PBS Digital Innovators list. It is part of a year-long professional development program.Kenny had to submit a short, two-minute video to PBS in order to be considered. Her submission had to explain how she uses technology in the classroom at Sacred Heart. Kenny is among six educators selected in New York.
"One of them is using the smart board that's in the classroom and using my iPad to mirror up onto the smart board," noted Kenny.
Kenny must conduct two professional developments over the year. They must be an hour-long, face-to- face or on-line.
"I will have to facilitate some sort of learning or professional development to my peers and colleagues," said Kenny.
Kenny said teachers who are not onboard with new, digital technology for students are truly missing a huge opportunity.
