A St. Bonaventure student has been honored by Glamour magazine for her teen volunteerism program. WBFO'S Eileen Buckley says the St. Bona junior was among 10-students recognized across the country for their campus leadership.
"It was an amazing few months. They contacted me through out the year last year. It is a year-long process. You are nominated by your institution and other individuals," said 21-year-old Simone Bernstein, a St. Bona Junior.
Bernstein was named in Glamour magazine's top ten College Women list.
The winners are cited for their academic success, extra curricular activities and making a unique community impact or starting up a non-profit organization.
Bernstein is cited for her teen volunteering Website called volunteennation.org. It helps youth find volunteer programs.
"We match you through their zip codes, through their areas of interest, and also by what they would like to do in the future," said Bernstein. "And we matched over 14,000 you and volunteer opportunities throughout the United States."
Bernstein became interested in volunteering at the age of 12, but she was told she was too young. That's when she discovered a children's shelter that allowed her to volunteer where she played Monopoly with other children. Bernstein created the website with her brother.
Bernstein is originally from St. Louis, Missouri, but has family living right here in Western New York.
The pre-med student says her goal is too fight maternal mortality.
"And work in the public health sector and work to fight maternal mortality," said Bernstein.
Bernstein said family and friends were "shocked" when they learned of her top top in the U.S.
