Music & Market Mondays at Buffalo River Grove! (Formerly Fontana's)

2025: Mondays June 16 to August 25, 4pm to 8pm
Get ready to kick off your week with excitement at Music and Market Mondays at the Grove!

Our vibrant outdoor venue is open to all, packed with live music, delicious theme food each week, cash bar, unique vendors, fun games, and community displays for every age. The Rare Book Room of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library is honored to acquire and exhibit a selection of artist books and prints made by AP (Anthony Peter) Gorny. Printmaker, photographer, sculptor, bookmaker, performer — none of these definitions truly capture AP as an artist. A graduate of SUNY Buffalo State University and Yale University's School of Art, AP's artwork is in over 50 institutional collections, including the Vatican Library, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Library of Congress.

Though many of AP's professional accomplishments extend far beyond Buffalo, he is a product of this city. AP was born into the insular Polish communities of Buffalo in the mid-twentieth century. When he finally ventured beyond his neighborhood, the expansive cultural experiences available to him in Buffalo helped shape the artist he was to become. Using oral histories, digitized materials from Buffalo's cultural institutions, and the artist's own work, the Library's Special Collections Department has woven the disparate pieces of AP's career to show an artist formed in a specific place and moment, working outside established channels to create a world for himself.

The exhibit AP Gorny: Different from the Rest will showcase artist books recently acquired by the Library's Rare Book Department in close cooperation with AP, as well as never-before-seen archival documentation and video footage made available through the digitization efforts of the Grosvenor Room.

If you've ever wanted to be part of a book club, but can't find time to do the homework, join us! We'll check in at the beginning, then read aloud from writings on care and community we've found meaningful. Some will volunteer to read while others are invited to continue doing life while listening- washing dishes, walking, fixing dinner, caretaking on mute, and then joining for discussion after the reading is complete. Afterwards, we'll ask: what did we learn? How does it fit into our actual lives? Our goal is to let the reading be in conversation with life, and make a book club more accessible for folks who don't have time or ability to read independently.

Join Buffalo's beginner Balinese Gamelan Angklung class! Nusantara Arts six week courses are designed to get new gamelan players off the ground running while having a great time playing music from the island of Bali.

In this course, students will gain a basic understanding of the techniques and stylistic characteristics of Balinese gamelan, while exploring and playing the various instruments that make up the gamelan angklung ensemble. No prior experience necessary! Open to all ages 10 and up. Join us this summer to learn about this unique musical art from Bali!

Join our FREE beginner Javanese gamelan class!
Six weeks of fun community oriented gamelan music classes. We will discuss and practice basic Javanese gamelan skills, theories and methods in an inclusive and fun environment. Sessions are led in a Javanese community oriented style and will focus on players learning several instrument types.

Class Topics will include but are not limited to:
Basic introduction to gamelan instruments, form and function.
Cultural contexts of gamelan music genres and related art forms like wayang and dance.
How to hold mallets properly and play several gamelan instruments.
How to listen to gamelan music as a player and listener.
Structure of a gamelan music piece.
How do devise elaborating parts on Peking and Bonang instruments.

Join our FREE Intro to Balinese Dance class!

Join our fun community oriented dance classes and get moving! We will demonstrate and practice basic Balinese dance skills and methods in an inclusive and fun environment. Balinese dance is beautiful movement art that uses the whole body and is incredibly expressive.
This class will teach fundamental movements and positions as well as learning choreography for two Balinese dance songs.
