Educational digital series won in Instructional category
Compact History, an original digital series from Buffalo Toronto Public Media that aims to help 4th to 8th-grade students understand the relevance of historical moments, won a NY Emmy on Saturday in the Informational/Instructional category. The episode that was nominated was “Battling for Fossils? How the Westward Expansion Fueled Conflict and Competition in the USA,” which highlights the story of a paleontologist from Western New York.
“This is such a proud moment for the entire Compact History team, which includes many people across Buffalo Toronto Public Media, from producers and editors to episode and curriculum writers and animators – and several talented freelancers, including host Cory McCants,” said Lynne Bader, VP of Original Content Creation. “Receiving an Emmy for Compact History demonstrates that our shift to shorter content made for digital platforms is succeeding.”
Compact History follows Cory, a time-traveling middle school history teacher, as he journeys beyond the textbook telling untold stories that transformed our world. From his time portal in Western New York, Cory discovers connections between local historical events and their national impact.
Compact History and its accompanying learning activities are available at wned.org/compacthistory or on PBS Learning Media, a free resource for educators. The videos are also available on the Buffalo Toronto Public Media YouTube channel.
Funding for Compact History was provided in part by the New York State Education Department.
