A fixture on the local high school sports scene has died. Buffalo News Sports Reporter Miguel "Miggy" Rodriguez has passed away at the age of 47.

Rodriguez was known for his coverage of high school sports for the paper for nearly two decades.

A colleague, Mark Scheer of the Investigative Post, posted on Facebook that he and Rodriguez had met while correspondents for the Medina Journal-Register, and they also worked together and became close friends while at the Niagara Gazette, before Rodriguez moved on to the Buffalo News in 2003.

In another Facebook post, his friends at the News said he enjoyed being out with the athletes, coaches, ADs, parents and others involved in high school sports.

WIVB-TV reported that Rodriguez had passed away after "a month-long battle with COVID-19" and that details of a remembrance had yet to be announced.
