Olympic Silver Medalist Nelson Vails will be leading this evening's "Slow Roll" in Buffalo.
Known as "The Cheetah", Vails hails from Harlem and is the first African-American to win an Olympic medal in cycling. He won his silver for Team USA in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
After riding as a professional from 1988 to 1995, he has worked as a cycling commentator for major TV networks and taken part in cycling safety programs across the country.
Vails leads this week’s Slow Roll community bike ride meeting at 5:30 p.m. and riding at 6:30 p.m. from The Historic Colored Musicians Club, located at 145 Broadway.
“Regardless of what separates us, the bicycle has had the unique ability throughout history to unite us all through the simple pleasure of riding,” said GObike Buffalo’s Executive Director Justin Booth, “We’re excited for Mr. Vails to come visit our city. As a cycling hero for many, his story of achievement resonates with us all.”
