  • In time for the holidays, Fresh Air presents an in-studio concert. Singer Rebecca Kilgore, trombonist Dan Barrett and pianist Rossano Sportiello played at the NOLA studios in Manhattan.
  • Guns N' Roses was the victim of BottleRock Napa Valley music festival's strict 10 p.m. curfew. The plug was pulled on the group, but stage amps and the crowd kept the song "Paradise City" going.
  • Martin Kaste reports from Brazil that South American politicians are talking more and more these days about economic integration. At a recent summit, Latin American presidents pledged to work for creation of a continent-wide free-trade zone by the year 2002. Analysts say the drive toward integration is spurred, in part, by the growing US involvement in the drug war in Colombia. Many Brazilian politicians, in particular, say the new billion-dollar US aid package to Colombia smacks of imperialism, and they want to counter the US presence by banding together.
  • Lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Colin Meloy is part of the indie pop quartet The Decemberists. The group hails from Portland, Ore. Meloy is known for using "10-dollar words" in his songs, and for "creating character studies that wouldn't sound out of place in a Victorian novel."
  • On the new album Trombone Tribe, trombonist Roswell Rudd plays with a number of groups including his own sextet. Music critic Kevin Whitehead has a review.
  • Graphic designer and music video director Mike Mills is making his feature film debut with Thumbsucker. The film, based on a novel by Walter Kirn, stars Vincent D'Onofrio and Tilda Swinton.
