When Hurricane Dorian hit the northern Bahamas a month ago, it shattered lives and ripped apart a delicate economy. Now, business owners are debating how to rebuild and whether it even makes sense.

It's been four weeks since Hurricane Dorian pummeled, flooded and scoured the northern Bahamas leaving the island of Abaco barely habitable. Dozens died and hundreds remain missing.

As Hurricane Dorian heads for the eastern Florida coast, NPR's Ailsa Chang checks in with the mayor of Panama City, Fla., — which was devastated last October when Hurricane Michael hit the panhandle.

With maximum sustained winds of about 90 mph, Dorian was a Category 1 storm when its eye crossed over Cape Hatteras. It is now moving northeast at 24 mph.

Forecasters warn, "Dorian is anticipated to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane ... into next week. Florida and Georgia have declared emergencies along the wide possible path of the storm.

"We acknowledge that there are many missing and that the number of deaths is expected to significantly increase," Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said in a statement late Friday.
