Four deputies with the Erie County's Sheriff's Office were injured in two separate attacks by inmates in the downtown Buffalo Holding Center. The first incident occurred around 11 p.m. Thursday. Lakita Hawkins, a 22-year-old Buffalo woman, was being moved to a different housing unit when she suddenly attacked her two escorting deputies. Additional deputies were needed to restrain her.
The two deputies were taken to Erie County Medical Center with head, neck and back injuries. They were treated and released. Hawkins has been charged with second degree assault and harassment.
The second attack occurred Friday morning. Twenty-year-old inmate Devan Hunley of Buffalo was being escorted to his housing unit when he pushed a deputy from behind, causing the deputy's head to slam into a metal door. Hunley fought with assisting deputies before he was eventually restrained.
Two deputies were taken to ECMC with head, leg, and hand injuries. Their condition is unknown. Hunley will face criminal charges for the assault.
Neither inmate was injured in the incidents.
