Governor Kathy Hochul visited Buffalo’s First Ward on Tuesday to announce the completion of Phase I of the redevelopment of Perry Homes, which had been abandoned for over a decade. Phase I included the demolition of the 24 vacant buildings and the completion of 405 units. Surrounded by the future tenants of the property, Hochul emphasized the importance of affordable housing.
“We came here and put shovels in the ground as a strong statement that that was the past, that is no more,” Hochul said. “The people of this city deserve the very best. Every person deserves the dignity of a beautiful home.”
Joining Hochul was Shavira Pittman, one of the first tenants of the Perry Homes. She said the initiative creates a safe and secure environment, for her and her family, including her five-month-old son.
“For his age, this is amazing for him. Unfortunately, he won't remember this moment, but growing up, as he gets older, he'll have the remembrance of being able to be in a nice home, in a nice environment, and a nice establishment,” Pittman said.
Hochul shared that the project utilized $225 million of state funding. Demolition and construction began last June.
