National Child Abuse Awareness Month begins with Pinwheels for Prevention

Motorists and pedestrians along Delaware Avenue near Summer Street in Buffalo may be wondering about the lawn full of pinwheels at 768 Delaware Ave., the former American Red Cross headquarters.

Three-thousand pinwheels were placed there by the staff and volunteers of the Child Advocacy Center at BestSelf Behavioral Health at that address, as part of the Pinwheels for Prevention Campaign.

Pinwheels have been selected as a national symbol for child abuse prevention and the 3,000 pinwheels represent the estimated number of children abused in Erie County every year. That is the second-highest number of child abuse and neglect cases in New York State.

April 1 marks the start of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and the pinwheel garden is just one of several month-long initiatives being held by the Child Advocacy Center at BestSelf to generate awareness of the campaign.
