The international battle of the Amhersts is on

Sir Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron of Amherst in his red and gold uniform and powdered white wig
Wikipedia
Sir Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron of Amherst.

The Town of Amherst has begun the second annual month-long competition among itself and three other municipalities named after Sir Jeffrey Amherst, the commander-in-chief of the forces in the British Army during the American Revolution.

The Amherst To Amherst Walking Challenge is to see which Amherst community — in New York, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Nova Scotia — can walk the most miles or kilometers in the month of February.

Our local Town of Amherst has four guided community walks planned for the next several Sundays, depending on weather and trail conditions.

  • Feb. 6 at Billy Wilson Park, 1290 Hopkins Rd., beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 13 at Saratoga Park, 200 Yorktown Rd., beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 20 at Walton Woods Park, in the Audubon neighborhood, beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Feb. 27 at Amherst State Park, on Mill Street in Williamsville, beginning at 3 p.m.
