Special highlights the powerful potential of local news archives

Retired from television reporting for five years, Rich Newberg continues to use his skills and love of archives. Along with Jacquie Walker and Tom Vetter, Newberg co-produced "The Buffalo Story: History Happens Here." It airs tonight at eight on WIVB-TV

The Buffalo Broadcasters Association has been collecting the film and video archives from local television news outlets. According to Rich Newberg, the former reporter for Channel Four, there are 73 years worth of history found in the collection. Much of the footage, Newberg says, could be lost forever unless it is saved in a digital form. To highlight its potential, Newberg, along with co-producers Tom Vetter and Jacquie Walker, worked for the last year on "The Buffalo Story: History Happens Here." The hour-long special airs at eight tonight on WIVB-TV.

A graduate of St. Mary's of the Lake School, St. Francis High School, and Buffalo State College, Jay has worked most of his professional career in Buffalo. Outside of public media, he continues in longstanding roles as the public address announcer for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and as play-by-play voice of Canisius College basketball.
