The Buffalo News and its new parent company, Lee Enterprises, have announced Tuesday morning that it will lay off or furlough an unspecified number of employees.
The company will also require the company's non-union workers and executives to take furloughs or pay cuts equal to two weeks pay by the end of June.
Advertising revenue has dropped significantly due to the coronavirus and its effect on the economy. The reductions in force are taking effect at all the publications owned by Lee.
Last week, the News canceled some shifts in its production department. It has also reduced the number of pages in their editions.
On Monday, the publisher of USA Today and some 100 other newspapers in the country, Gannett, announced its employees will be required to take one week of unpaid leave by the end of June.
