Holy Angels Church closing on Buffalo's West Side

Holy Angels Catholic Church

A West Side landmark for nearly 170 years is closing. Holy Angels Catholic Church has announced it is closing in July 2020.

Run by the Missionary of Oblates of Mary Immaculate, the Porter Avenue church has contributed to Buffalo holy life since 1852.

The Buffalo Catholic Diocese says the decision to close was made by the Missionary, primarily due to financial reasons.

"Bishop Malone and the Diocese of Buffalo did not make this decision and were informed of it recently," said Communications Director Kathy Spangler in a statement. "The church, rectory and convent need major structural repair and the repair costs would be excessive."

The Missionary will continue at Holy Cross and Our Lady of Hope Parishes in Buffalo. The Diocese said it will be encouraging parishioners from Holy Angels to worship at one of these other parishes.
