An iconic landmark in the Town of Tonawanda is coming down Wednesday.
Anyone driving down Sheridan Drive in front of the town's Police and Court building has seen a bluest-silver metal pedestrian footbridge over the roadway. When it was built decades ago, the bridge allowed residents to cross the busy eight lanes of Sheridan Drive to get to Hoover Elementary School and, later, the town's Aquatic and Fitness Center.
However, the bridge has been closed for the last few years, as its condition has deteriorated and become unsafe. Replacing the bridge would be costly.
So down it will come, beginning Wednesday at 10 p.m. Town of Tonawanda Police say work will take place overnights and is expected to take two days, weather permitting.
Detour signs will be posted and lanes of traffic will be reduced until the project begins. All sidewalks and lanes of traffic on Sheridan between Delaware and Colvin will be closed 10 p.m.-6 a.m. each day work takes place.
