UB researchers meet with residents about Tonawanda Coke study

The first public meeting was held with residents Saturday about a University at Buffalo study that will examine soil pollution around the Tonawanda Coke plant.

The meeting at Grand Island Town Hall gave residents a chance to learn more about the soil study. Researchers want access to private property in the town and city of Tonawanda and Grand Island to find out just how far pollution from Tonawanda Coke traveled.

Some residents may be asked for blood and urine samples to determine the plant's impact on health.

The $11 million study is expected to last ten years.
