Congressman Brian Higgins is raising doubts about a Washington plan to start asking visitors to this country about their social media accounts.
Though social media has been a tool for terrorists, like the married couple in San Bernardino, California in December, Higgins sees the proposal stepping into delicate territory.
"Civil liberties are something that we have to be very vigilant in protecting, especially in this heightened environment on security, national security and what's going on in the world," Higgins said.
"Civil rights have taken a beating already, so we have to ensure there's no more erosion of that. In fact, they should be giving back those liberties."
The project from the Homeland Security Department has gone far enough that it's in the Federal Register, the compendium of everything going on in the federal government. Higgins says before it goes further than that, the House Homeland Security Committee, of which he is a member, will probably hold hearings.
