Thruway expansion plans could ease traffic issues

WBFO News File Photo

A section of the the Thruway in Cheektowaga is going to be widened in an effort to reduce the numerous traffic jams that have plagued the area for years.

Plans include adding an eastbound lane between Route 33 and Cleveland Drive,  near the I-290.

"It's a critical area on the 90 and it is constantly being congested," observed state Senator Timothy Kennedy, who says Albany and Washington have committed funds to ensure the project moves forward.

"Quite frankly, there are safety concerns because of that congestion, particularly during rush-hour traffic."

Noise barriers will be installed on both sides of the Thruway.

Kennedy is calling on the public to attend an information session on the noise barrier proposal  at the Cleveland Hill Fire Hall in Cheektowaga from four until nine tonight.
