Dozens of cats die in Niagara County fire

In Niagara County, 34 cats died in a fire this morning in a wooden shed in front of a house at 2253 Braley Road in the Town of Porter.

The Niagara County Sheriff's Department says the resident of the house called 9-1-1 at about 9:30 this morning after discovering the fire and not being able to enter the shed. The Ransomville Volunteer Fire Company put out the fire but was not able to save the cats, which the resident says were family pets. The county's Fire Investigation Unit is attempting to determine the cause of the fire.

Kelley Casale of the Niagara County SPCA says the residence has no history of cruelty complaints. She believes the homeowners were taking in strays.
