Winds whip through Buffalo region wreaking havoc along lakeshore

The High Wind Warning across the Buffalo region has now been downgraded to a Wind Advisory that will remain in effect until 3pm today.

National Weather Service Meteorologist Bob Hamilton tells WBFO that winds gusted to nearly 70 miles per hour during the peak of the storm.

"We had a deep storm system lift up across the upper Great Lakes, a storm that probably is only in place every 15 to 20 years. So, it was an unusual storm," says Hamilton. "It ended up producing very strong winds across the western part of the state, especially close to Lake Erie where winds gusted close to 70 in some areas. That storm is now across the Saint Lawrence Valley, moving away. While winds will be strong again today, they won't be nearly as strong as they were yesterday."

Hamilton notes there were reports of trees toppled across the area.

NYSEG and National Grid reported various outages.

An official with NITTEC  says State Department of Transportation Crews are on the scene in Hamburg, where Route 5 was again closed this morning between Camp Road and Big Tree Road due to flooding along the lakeshore.
