International church leaders gather in Buffalo

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

Religious leaders from around the world are in town this week for a meeting of the International Commission for the Anglican-Orthodox Theological Dialogue.

In meetings, theologians from each group are trying to determine what they agree on and what they don't.

Canon John Gibaut is director of Unity, Faith and Order for the Anglican Communion. Canon Gibaut says members are close to an agreement.

"It's our great hope that we will finish an agreed statement which is five years in the making. We only meet once a year on what is called theological anthropology and that basically is, what does it mean to be a human being in light of our faith in God? We hope to have that text finished when we leave Buffalo this week and it will be called the Buffalo Statement," said Gibaut.

The local meeting is being hosted by Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, familiar to many as the home of the Greek Festival. The two churches have  a combined total membership world wide exceeding 300 million people across much of the planet.
