Buffalo Harbor State Park has become one of the city’s newest waterfront hotspots, with a playground, and soon-to-come fishing pier. On Saturday night, the park adds to its list of assets, becoming the city’s newest movie venue.
The 1988 Tom Hanks classic “Big” will be shown at the park, as part of a statewide celebration of filming in New York. The film will be shown at three other state and city parks around New York as well.
Buffalo Harbor is New York’s newest state park. Angela Berti, a spokesperson for New York State Parks said its potential continues to grow.
“Doing the movie there just sort of shows that there’s a future, that this is going to be the hot new spot on the waterfront for Western New Yorkers,” said Berti. “And we really do hope that it becomes sort of another gathering place for folks as we celebrate the all-too-short summer season here.”
Berti said showing movies at the park in the future is something that the state would like to consider. She noted that there are some challenges with showing a film at the outer harbor, due to the significant winds coming off Lake Erie, but said the park works with a vendor who uses equipment capable of overcoming such obstacles.

The movie begins at 8:15 p.m. with a presentation by local filmmaker Peter McGinnis and Buffalo Niagara Film Commissioner Tim Clark. Lawn chairs and snacks are encouraged, and food trucks are expected to be on-hand to sell additional refreshments.
