What appears to be a large mound of dirt outside Buffalo's Central Terminal is actually an icy pile of old snow left behind from last season's winter storm. WBFO's Eileen Buckley found some curious citizens checking it out.
"It's still amazing -- there's still snow here in August. Ninety-one degrees yesterday and we still got snow -- we've got to call it the Buffalo glacier," said Bill Schiess of Amherst.

Schiess wanted to check out the snow debris pile left behind from a record-breaking snow fall and winter storm. It was sunny, warm and windy afternoon. You can barely see the white ice under the dirt and even some grass growing on top.

"It's like a cesspool -- where you walk too close and you sink right in. The dirt is insulating it from the sun and if you dig in the middle it's dirty snow, but it's still there -- just amazing. I love it," stated Schiess.
Schiess was not alone in checking out the pile. Two adults and three children from the neighborhood were exploring the icy mound, and nearby city of Buffalo crews were using high lifts to break down other ice piles of mud and debris. Public Works Commissioner Steve Stepniak tells WBFO News he had predicted last winter that this would happen.
"To be honest with you I did say July just from our experience from others. We had a large snow pile in South Park years ago that took around the same time, maybe just a little bit earlier," said Stepniak.
Following the November 2014 Lake Effect snow storm, city crews dump 11,000 loads of snow at the Central Terminal site.
"I would say so, I don't think there's too many places in the northeast that have snow. We'll have new snow on top of it before you now it," said Schiess.
