Traffic across the Peace Bridge into the U.S. should be moving a lot faster in the wake of the experimental system of checking trucks before they start across.
The pilot project for pre-clearance of trucks has expired but it's still being used to process freight traffic. It's part of a series of technological changes which should be helping ease the flow, along with a widening of the Buffalo end which should allow more cars to use Nexus passes.
More vehicles are paying with E-ZPass and more travelers are using those Nexus passes, both of which speed traffic.
"The good thing is the pre-clearance pilot project yielded results that nobody expected," said Rep. Brian Higgins.
"That's just the change in use of information technology. What truckers are obligated to present will significantly reduce wait times up to 70 percent."
Truckers are supposed to e-mail their cargo manifest to the bridge well before they arrive. It's all part of a push to make the Northern Border more secure while allowing traffic to move faster using a mix of technology and physical improvements.
