The heart of Buffalo's African American Heritage district is hoping to take advantage of the city's growing tourist appeal.
The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission continues to work toward developing an attractive destination around the intersection of Broadway and Michigan Avenue. One way they plan to boost activity in the corridor is by utilizing funding received from the New York Power Authority. Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission Chair Karen Stanley-Fleming says the money will be used towards new hires.
"We are ready for new team members on our staff, which would be a specialist in tourism and marketing," said Stanley-Fleming.
Stanley-Fleming says the new hire will increase event planning as well as coordinating artists and storytellers to keep activity in the corridor.
The Commission is also looking for assistance in terms of fundraising and physical development, to include finding a permanent home. Members have their eyes set on a building next to the Michigan Street Baptist Church.
Fleming says the Commission hopes to have their new hires in place soon to take advantage of the remaining summer tourism season.
