US Senator Charles Schumer is criticizing a proposal that would cut funds for the fight against bird flu. The budget for the US Department of Agriculture could take a $500 million hit if the proposal is passed. Schumer states that could result in much higher egg prices for consumers. The presence of bird flu has already raised egg prices nearly 50 percent over last year.
The virus is a growing concern, as 10 percent of the nation's egg laying hens have been infected.
