Work is officially underway on Walmart's new Supercenter in Cheektowaga. Town Supervisor Mary Holtz joined store employees Tuesday morning for a brief groundbreaking at the former Super Flea site at 2500 Walden Ave. Holtz says the story will be a big improvement over the former flea market.
"We had tires lying all over the place. We had rats. The inside of it was actually dangerous...fire traps and so forth," Holtz said.
Walmart will close its smaller store at Walden Ave. and Harlem Rd. when the new store opens in the spring of 2016.
The company plans to hire about 150 additional workers for the Supercenter which will carry a full line of groceries.
