Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo is now home to a program that aims to provide more advanced care for women whose pregnancies are complicated by fetal abnormalities.
The Fetal Care Center was formally dedicated Thursday on the fifth floor of the Bryant Street hospital. Hospital officials say it will provide women and their families a location that provides numerous critical services under the same roof. But more importantly, they add, it introduces shared decision making to the process.
"What's unique about it is the people behind the system," said Dr. Jeffrey Johnson, who leads the hospital's Maternal-Fetal Medicine division. "Being able to collaborate with everybody in real time, and being able to talk to patients at the time that they're being seen by both the pre-natal as well as the pediatric team."
The center seeks to assist in pregnancies featuring abnormalities including cleft lip, spina bifida, intestinal problems and other complicating conditions. Services include ultrasound, intrauterine transfusions, fetal MRI, fetal echocardiography and mental support for the mother.
