The Buffalo Zoo has welcomed a new female giraffe born this past weekend. Baby Zuri arrived Saturday, February 21 at the city Zoo.
Zuri's parents are 20-year-old Agnes and three-year-old Moke.
The Zoo's keeper staff named the new arrival. Zuri is a Swahili name meaning beautiful or lovely. The Zoo says Zuri weighed 112 pounds at birth.
For now the Zoo's giraffe house will be temporarily closed as mom and new baby bound and adjust to one another.
But visitors will be allowed to enter the vestibule of the giraffe house and view the animals through the windows.
"The gestation period of giraffes is around 15 months. Calves usually remain with their mothers until they are around 22 months old," noted the Zoo in a news release.
