UB students returning to dorms following power outage

WBFO News file photo

About 500 University at Buffalo students are returning to their dorm after being evacuated due to a power outage that left them in the cold and dark Wednesday evening. UB Officials said 50 students spent the night at Alumni Arena, while the remainder stayed with friends.

UB Police say the outage was caused by a broken sprinkler line at the Red Jacket Quadrangle on UB's North Campus in Amherst.  The broken line damaged an electrical breaker panel and shut down electricity and heat to the residence hall.

Crews were able to repair the situation by late Wednesday afternoon but temperatures were still much too cold for students to return.

The American Red Cross brought in cots and students in need of a place to stay were moved to Alumni Arena for the night.
