Lighting companies around the world are being asked to design a new lighting plan for Niagara Falls.
Officials with the Illumination Board say the current 20-year-old lights being used aren't up to par anymore.
Niagara Falls, Ontario Mayor Jim Diodati is chair of the binational board. Diodati says board members have been working together on a decision about what to do.
Deciding Xenon lights are the way to go, Diodati says the decision was made to open up the competition to the world.
"I think every company in the world would like to say 'Our company lights up Niagara Falls'," Diodati said. "One of the world's foremost natural destinations."
Diodati says the baord is still waiting to determine the final cost of the project and does not yet know when it will be complete. The new system will be paid for by governments on both sides of the falls and their tourism industries who, the mayor says, benefit from the millions of tourists who come to the falls each year.
