A Williamsville Cub Scout group held a Veterans Day ceremony at the Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park Tuesday.
Cub Scout Pack 457 recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “God Bless America” in honor of the veterans that have served and are currently serving in the U.S. military. They also took part in a dedication ceremony, where each scout read the name of a service member they’re honoring this year. 10-year-old Christopher Kerr says he enjoyed learning about his grandfather’s service.
“I never knew that my late grandfather, John Patrick Kerr, served in the Army for the War of Korea [Korean War],” said Kerr.
10-year old Brian Von Buhr says it gave him a chance to learn about both of his grandfather’s service in the military.
“I never knew that my grandfather’s were in the Air Force. I only knew that they worked in the steel mills. So, when I read that I thought, wow. That’s interesting,” said Von Buhr.
Cubmaster Matt Balling says he believes it’s crucial to teach young people the importance of honoring our nation’s heroes.
“When we found out that there was a limited number of ceremonies going on [Tuesday] we really felt it was important to reconnect our cub scouts with what cub scouting is all about, which is recognizing service to America and serving your community,” said Balling.
Balling encourages other Cub Scout Packs across Western New York to have their own ceremony on Veterans Day as well. The scout’s continued their festivities by learning about the military and taking a tour of the Naval Park.
“God bless the veterans that have served in the U.S.,” said Kerr.
