Former Bills Quarterback Jim Kelly is facing yet another challenge. The Hall of Famer has told the Miami Herald Newspaper he is now battling a form of the staph infection called MRSA in his bones.
Kelly broke the news while at his alma mater, the University of Miami, as an honorary captain for their game against North Carolina.
“I came down with MRSA,” he told the Miami Herald, adding “I was cleared in September of the cancer — I have another MRI in two weeks. The toughest part for me was I was almost ready to take out my feeding tube, I was feeling good and they said they need to do some biopsies. Those 12 biopsies put me back so far.”
Kelly told the paper he still mostly uses a feeding tube because his mouth is too sore and he can’t open his jaw wide enough to chew food. He has had to cancel his beloved moose hunts and several family trips but went on to tell the Herald "I wouldn’t miss going to the ‘U’ for anything... I’m excited, especially because it’s my alma mater and I look forward to seeing a bunch of buddies I haven’t seen in a while.”
Kelly told the paper he is taking intravenous antibiotics daily to treat the infection and is due for another MRI in the coming weeks, as he continues to recover from surgery and treatment for jaw cancer.
