Governor Andrew Cuomo says he is "not convinced" the Buffalo Bills need a new stadium.
During a stop on the Buffalo State Campus Tuesday, Cuomo told reporters building a new stadium is going to depend on who buys the Bills and what their expectations are. But he says no one is anxious to build a stadium if it's not needed because no one wants to pay for it.
"Stadiums are very expensive creatures. And even if you said, 'Well everyone is going to contribute: the state, the county, the NFL, the new owner,' it is still expensive," Cuomo said.
But ultimately Cuomo says building a new stadium is going to "be a function of what the new buyer and the NFL say is a condition to keep the team in western New York."
He says there are "a number of bidders" involved who are committed to doing just that.
"But it's fluid. And we only know what we know now. The situation literally has to unfold and the bid package is out and people are considering it. I think you'll have a number of bids that are attractive that come in," Cuomo said.
Developer Donald Trump said on Twitter Tuesday that he is the only potential owner of the Buffalo Bills who will keep the team in Buffalo "where it belongs."
