Ben Franklin still appears on brand new $100 bills that are going into circulation Tuesday, but there are some new features and colors that have been added.
The Federal Reserve is supplying the newly redesigned notes to regional banks across the U.S. Tuesday. The new bills feature a 3-D security ribbon to the right of Franklin's portrait and an inkwell.
"The 3-D security ribbon is a blue ribbon to the right of Franklin's portrait and it contains moving images of bells and one-hundreds," said Sonja Danburg, program manager for U.S. Currency Education at the Federal Reserve Board.
Danburg tells WBFO News both images are activated by motion, featuring moving images of bells and one-hundreds.
"The most interesting thing about that feature is that the bells and one-hundreds are going to move in the opposition direction of how you are moving the note," said Danburg.
The design incorporates new security features to deter counterfeiters and also helps businesses and consumers detect if it is genuine.
"The front of the note there is now a pale blue background color," said Danburg. "One interesting design change is on the back of the note. We still have a vignette of Independence Hall, but instead of featuring the front of that building we now feature the rear."
