Summer 2013 wetter and cooler than recent years

Summer 2013 came to an end this weekend with the arrival of fall. This summer was the ninth wettest on record and it was a bit cooler compared to recent years.

The summer began with heavy rains that caused severe flooding in Lockport.  Rainfall on July 3 drenched a sellout crowd at the downtown ballpark for the Bisons/Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra doubleheader.  And a spectacular thunderstorm disrupted the Tragically Hip concert later in July at the outer harbor.

Officially, more than 13.5 inches of rain fell at the airport weather station.

As for the temperature, National Weather Service Meteorologist Tom Paone says summer 2013 was about average.

"Nothing extraordinary in terms of prolonged heat," Paone said. "It was certainly more summer-like in terms of temperatures as the season progressed.  But the beginning was very cool."

A cold front this weekend ushered in fall. Temperatures will be much more seasonable this week compared to the high of 81 degrees last Friday.
