Buffalo soldier found dead in Fort Hood barracks

For the second time in less than four weeks, a Western New York soldier stationed at Fort Hood, Texas has died. Officials say PFC Lisa Christine Salzman, 27, of Buffalo was found unresponsive in her barracks on Sunday. She died shortly thereafter.

Salzman, who had recently completed her first full year of military service, had already earned several awards and decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon. An investigation into her death is underway.

Salzman, a small arms artillery repairer, entered the military in May 2012. She was assigned to 1st Battalion, 44th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade at Fort Hood in January.

On July 14, PFC Christopher Kent Heinz, 25, of Lockport drowned while swimming with friends near the fort.
