The sewage treatment plant in Niagara Falls is back in operation a week after a severe storm knocked out the facility's pumps, sending more than 100 million gallons of wastewater into the Niagara River.City officials Friday morning announced five temporary pumps are operating at the plant, which treats about 24 million gallons of sewage daily.
Sewage had been flowing into the river untreated since a storm last Friday night shut down the plant and flooded the facility's pumps.
Officials say they hope to have one of the plant's main pumps back online by late Friday.
City officials said earlier this week that the cost to repair the plant was estimated to be at least $2 million.
