Snowy start to Friday, windy weekend ahead

WBFO News photo by Eileen Buckley

Western New Yorkers woke up to snow-covered roads Friday morning. But the lake snows eased up overnight and the National Weather Service canceled its Lake Effect Snow Advisory for Niagara, Orleans and Monroe Counties.

In the metro Buffalo region you can expect a cold and party sunny day with a chance of snow showers Friday. Temperatures will only rise into the mid 20's with winds gusting up to 30 miles per hour.

Snow covered streets in metro Buffalo area Friday

There is a chance of snow for the Buffalo area Friday night and it will be windy.  Gusts of up to 45 miles per hour are expected.  Not as cold for Saturday with highs reaching the mid 40's. But snow showers are likely overnight Saturday with more windy conditions and lows in the 20's.

The National Weather service has issued a wind advisory from 7 pm Friday to 4 pm Sunday for Southern Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany counties.

A wind advisory will be in effect from 11 pm this evening to 4 pm Sunday for Northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans, and Genesee counties.

Winds will be southwest 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. The strongest winds will be found across the higher terrain and near the Lake Erie shoreline.

Winds of this magnitude will have the potential to bring down some tree limbs and power lines which could lead to localized power outages. The stronger wind gusts may also make it difficult to handle high profile vehicles.
