Utility Companies Work to Restore Power

Thousands of people throughout Western New York are without electricity after what was left of Hurricane Sandy blew through the area late Monday and early Tuesday.

National Grid spokesman Steve Brady says as of 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, about 5,000 customers were without power.

"We do have some scattered outages, but the worst of it would be to the north along the Ontario shoreline and down in the extreme southern tier, through the hill country," Brady said.

Brady says crews are trying to get a handle of the damage caused by the storm.

"We know we have some broken poles, a few transformers and primary wire on the ground and a lot of tree limbs to move...but clearly the damage was less severe than we were prepared to handle," Brady said.

Brady expects all customers to be back on line by the end of Tuesday.

Meanwhile, New York State Electric and Gas reported more than 100,000 customers across the state without electricity, including about 600 in Alleghany County Tuesday morning.
