Erie County Sheriff Deputy charged with DWI

An off-duty Erie County Sheriff Deputy was arrested and charged with DWI after hitting a motorcycle in Amherst early Saturday morning.

Police say around 4:07 a.m. 28-year-old Michael Haug of Kenmore slammed into a motorcycle that was stopped at a red light.

It happened on Sheridan Drive at Bailey Avenue.

37-year-old Daniel Colosimo of Tonawnada was thrown from his cycle and suffered head injuries.  He is listed in critical condition at ECMC.

Police say Haug  refused a breathalyzer test, but a judge ordered a mandatory draw of his blood.  Haug was arraigned Saturday morning and is being held on $25,000 bail.

But the Erie County Sheriff says Haug will be transported to a nearby county jail and not to the Holding Center due to his familiarity with the jail.

The Sheriff’s office says Haug was suspended without pay immediately pending the outcome of both the criminal and administrative investigations.

The Sheriff’s Office says it is cooperating with Amherst Police and the Erie County District Attorney’s Office during the course of this investigation, but has not further comment on the matter at this time.

Haug has been on the force for five and a half years.
